West Hartford SEPTA HistoryThe West Hartford Special Education Parent Teacher Association (West Hartford SEPTA) was founded by a group of parents in June 2002. The initial idea came from parents with children in preschool, but quickly expanded to include families of children of all ages, teachers and administrators. These individuals recognized that in working and learning together, the children would receive even greater advantages in physical, mental and social education. In its short history West Hartford SEPTA has provided many educational opportunities. West Hartford administrators and teachers have presented workshops on IDEA, Individual Education Programs (IEPs), transitions to elementary and middle school, assistive technology, enhancing social relationships and more. Outside speakers have included recreation providers, Special Education attorneys, neuropsychologists, advocates, representatives from the Learning Disabilities Association (LDA), and Connecticut Parent Advocacy Center (CPAC). West Hartford SEPTA has also helped guide policy. SEPTA petitioned the Board of Education to review the policy regarding siblings of children attending town-wide special education programs. After analysis and discussion, the Board of Education approved a policy whereby siblings may attend the same school as a brother or sister participating in a town-wide program. This enabled families to make the best decision for their family, rather than to have one policy for everyone. The West Hartford SEPTA board is always interested in suggestions of topics and speakers for their monthly meetings. Please feel free to email us with suggestions. The 2008 ~ 2009 board members are:
